Although the property did not sustain damage during Hurricane Maria and is currently operational, travelers should note that the island of Puerto Rico was significantly impacted by the storm in September 2017. TRYP by Wyndham Isla Verde is a three-pearl hotel located in its namesake Isla Verde, a short walk from restaurants, bars, casinos, and Isla Verde Beach. All 115 guest rooms are eye-catching, and there are number of creatively themed rooms geared toward different types of travelers. In public spaces, the hotel has a splashy modern design, which some guests might find too flashy. But the outdoor pool, restaurant, and other facilities are bright and appealing. As an alternative, the upper-middle-range Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort is a similar chain property with an in-house casino, but rates can be higher.
Chain hotel with a cool design, excellent location, and solid on-site amenities
Opened in November 2015, TRYP is a remodel of the former Howard Johnson hotel found on the same site. The hotel is part of the TRYP by Wyndham chain of hotels, a brand that offers mid-range hotels in downtown centers. While there’s no denying that this is a chain hotel masquerading as a boutique one, it still feels polished for the most part, particularly in the lobby, which is large and striking and features a contrasting color palette of deep blue and yellow. TRYP attracts a mixed crowd. The fun bunk bed rooms are a great fit for families, while the colorful meeting spaces and high-tech guest rooms -- not to mention the hotel’s proximately to the Hato Ray business district -- are ideal for working travelers. The convenient location close to Isla Verde Beach appeals to vacationers seeking value near the coast.
Set in the buzzing Isla Verde district, a six-minute walk from the beach
TRYP is located in lively Isla Verde, bordered by luxe hotels, diverse restaurants, and plenty of nightlife options. Isla Verde Beach is the focal point of the neighborhood, located a 16-minute walk away from the hotel. This wide, white-sand beach is a popular spot for water sports. The upscale shops of Condado are a 10-minute drive away; more shops are found at the massive Plaza Las Americas shopping mall which can be reached in a 15-minute drive. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is accessible in about five minutes by car.
Sleek, modern rooms with iPod docks and charming touches such as local coffee
Guest rooms at TRYP are decorated in gray tones with pops of orange and purple, along with vivid geometric patterns. All rooms include iHome radios, iPod docks, and 39-inch flat-screen TVs with projection functionality from headboards. Rooms also have stylish work desks with ergonomic chairs, as well as cushy round ottomans and chairs. Coffeemakers are stocked with local Yaucono coffee. Some rooms have microwaves, and mini-fridges are available upon request. Some also offer plush bathrobes as well as private balconies with nice city views. Bathrooms have walk-in showers and square sinks. Bottles of white citrus-scented body wash, shampoo, body lotion, and conditioner by Under the Canopy sit on floating wood shelves.
The hotel also has theme rooms with extra amenities: The Fitness Room offers an exercise bike, a floor mat, extra work-out towels, and bottles of mineral water. The Media Room includes a Samsung Blu Ray/DVD/CD player, a sound-bar audio solution with wireless subwoofer, and 3D glasses, while the Family Room features bunk beds and special gifts for kids upon arrival.
Attractive open-air pool, trendy restaurant with buffet breakfast, and lots of sleek meeting space
The hotel’s on-site restaurant, Emigrante Gastrobar, features a predominantly black-and-white color scheme paired with gleaming chrome tables. A breakfast buffet is served here each morning, which includes a mix of hot and cold items, but is not free. The restaurant is also open for lunch, dinner, and drinks. In addition to Emigrante, the hotel houses an independently owned pizza restaurant, Faccio.
Other features include a large outdoor pool surrounded by lounge chairs and patio tables. The pool area is swanky and minimalist, bordered by high walls on all sides which provide privacy but eliminate potential views. The hotel offers five meeting rooms, which can accommodate up to 175 guests. The meeting rooms are as contemporary as the hotel’s other facilities, featuring ergonomic chairs, funky artwork, and bold colors. Two PCs in the lobby function as the business center. A small fitness center has some cardio equipment, a weight machine, and an exercise ball. A pair of coin-operated washers and dryers are set in a tiny alcove within the fitness center. Self-parking is offered on-site for a fee, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
